Can Kawasaki come back?

Post by kmf603 » Fri Jun 10, 2011 10:50 pm

Two years last March my daughter 5 at the time was running a really high fever of 104.+ 2 nights in row we took her to the ER the first they brought her fever down and sent us home. The second night I took her and she had the added rash, red palms and soles and huge swollen lyphods that you could see on the side of her neck on top of the 104.+ fever. They brought the fever down and told me if the fever had been going on longer he would say it was Kawasaki but she would need another few days of the high fever for them to even consider it. They sent me home and I took her to her doctor the next who told me to take her to Children's hospital right away she would call and let them know I was coming. After a week in the hospital she had received the treatment for Kawasaki, we have since done all the after treatment appointments and she had been fine since.
Today she is running a 104.+ temp and motrin does not seem to be doing anything for it, she is tired and will not eat just like before. This is the first day of high fever and I could just be nervous but is this something that I need to worry about? Can this come back? I am sure this same question is on here a dozen times over but being new to the forum I am just asking.

I wish I would of found this forum sooner when I was going through it 2 years ago.

From what I understand recurrence rates are very low so it would be rare but not impossible. However i would not think fever alone would indicate return of KD. I would definitely call a pediatrician though since the fever is not responding to Motrin or tylenol. Given your history you always want to be careful. Hope she is feeling better and keep us posted.

104 is not normal.
Only a few things can make it go 104+.
You need to be concern.

I can't say whether your daughter is having a relapse or not but my daughter is 3 1/2 years past KD. She continued to get a 103-104.5 fever every illness past KD even a cold would turn into chronic sinusitis and a high fever. She never had this issue before KD and recently she has been recovering normally from illnesses but it went on for three full years post KD. No one would listen or could tell me why. We have had blood work done etc but it has not been a lapse with her. Just scary and frustrating with no answers. I'm hoping she has out grown it now. :)

My daughter had many unexplainable high fevers before KD; so when she was originally diagnosed with a double ear infection the week of KD and later spiked a high fever I was not overly concerned. The only difference that time around was that we could not get the fever under control, nor could we get it to break. Then she started developing more symptoms that we later found out go along with KD.

She ran a fever for over a week straight a couple months post-KD. After blood work her cardioligist decided to readmit her for what he thought was a recurrence, even thought it was rare. Thankfully her fever miraculoulsy disappeared once we got there.

However, they did tell us for it to be a reoccurrence there would have to be more symptoms present then just the fever to treat her as KD again.

Hope this helps and I hope your little one is feeling better. I know it's scary; just hang in there and trust your instincts.

My daughter (almost 7) has just had a Kawasaki recurrence- 3 years after the last. At least they are all pretty sure. The interesting thing is that the first 3 or 4 days she only had a low grade fever not going over 38 when I checked it. The drs say that the disease is often milder in older children. We are yet to find out the extent of effects only had ivig 2 nights ago and only obvious arteries not enlarged this time ... Yet 

My son has had it 3 times now, all times were at the end of May beginning of June. All,3 times he was exposed to fresh carpet cleaning . He has heart aneurysms but He is fine now and been KD free for 1.5 years. He has always fevered when ever he was sick with anything, even when he was teething. He has problems with his immune, he is always 'just ever so slightly' sick and has lots of warts.
Hope this helps

My daughter has been diagnosed with KD when she was two years old. We took her to the hospital in Manila where she was treated with IVG. My deep concern is can it come back? Because every time that my daughter temperature is high I panic because of her history of KAwasaki.

The disease can come back. I had the disease when I was 3 years old and now I'm 12 , it usually comes back when your 15 years or older. There is a 50/50 chance it can come back. I'm scared I might get it again.

Yesx kawasaki can come back. It may not sow all the symptoms as the first time, but definetely if your doctor or you are suspicious about KD then echo should be taken several times to determine if the disease is developing again, even if rash, red eyes or fever are not present .
