Immune System Change during KD

Postby Momcat » Sun Feb 21, 2010 2:37 pm

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2016 ... dinalpos=1

It seems that during acute KD there is depletion of memory type T-cells, (perhaps the ones that help regulate a normal immune response?) As far as I can tell, this article suggests that after the depletion of the memory cells and during the convalscent stages of KD the immune system (other Tcells) clones the memory cells to get things back in balance again. Is this how you guys read this?

That is what I took from it too Sandy. I am just wondering in some of the kids like ours whose immune systems still seem out of whack that maybe there is some problem with their Tcells. Have you ever had blood work done on Paige to see what her Tcell production is? I know that Greg has not. Thanks for posting the article is was very interesting!

No I haven't. I should take some of these reports to her cardiologist when we see him next month. But, you know how that goes!!!!!!! Then I will be the over-reactive mom with handfuls of documents....they will quote me the "general rules" of KD. An immunoligist would like htis kind of informaiton-but we aren't in that stage of the game anymore.....although he is in the same hospital we are going to for the stress echo....... No, never had that kind of bloodwork done, not even sure if there is such a beast or if most of this information comes from autopsies of KD victims.

A lot of the transplants for heart, kidney and such are T cell repressants.

I do know of a Mom who had a child that had reacted previous to a DPT shot, and when she took her child in for just the DT shot the nurse messed up and gave it another DPT shot. The physcian gave the child an I. V. full of T cell repressant. It was thought for a long time it could be the T cells - named so because they are produced by the thalmus as children and as they get older the T cell production is switched off as the thalmus shrinks and the bone marrow starts producing them.
