Anyone know much about this? I stumbled across it while looking into asprin use in babies. My Bub is 6mo, he got KD 3wks ago, and is on asprin obviously. I'm a little concered that there is this link between childhood use of asprin, and it possibly triggering Reyes syndrome.
Does anyone else share these concerns? Or done much digging into the subject?

Yes, as I remember when one of the specialists was asked about it she responded that there have been no known cases of Reyes on low dose aspirin. Is your child on the 81 mg a day? After recovery you might ask your doctor about a flu shot......depending on how you feel about that subject. You might search the forum regarding Reyes. It has been talked about before, but not for a while. You should be able to define your search by using that search box on the upper right corner of the screen.

No he is on 35mg a day. just the one dose which is suited for his weight apparently, he is under 7kg and 6 months old!

Our daughter just turned one and is on low dose aspirin for KD at 8 weeks old. We are VERY careful about exposing her to others for fear of exposure to the flu or chickenpox. Her doctors insisted she, my husband and myself all get the flu shot. We were not very excited at all about this but did agree. She received IVIG last Feb and have been told that she should receive chickenpox vaccination this Jan. It's really hard keeping our baby home and away from public places but from what we understand it's worth the precaution for fear of Reyes Syndrome. Are others keeping their children "isolated" like this? She is not school aged and we don't have other children so it is a bit easier to do. Wondering how others have handled this especially with older children. Our daughter will continue to be on low dose aspirin so we will have to continue to deal with this issue.

My daughter was on high dose aspirin whilst she was in hospital...600mg which is double the max adult dose and we were advised of the risks associated with Reyes. However when she moved on to low dose, 37.5 mg daily we were advised that this carries no more risk of Reyes than not being on it at all.

As she was on steroid therapy for 3 months after coming out of hospital which carries its own risks re: chicken pox etc I chose to keep her away from other young children as far as I could whilst she was on the combo of aspirin and steroids. Now she is only on low dose aspirin she is back in pre school and the consultant has assured me that if she should pick up flu or chicken pox she will not be at any more risk of Reyes than any other child.

That's my experience anyway. Have no idea if the risks are considered the same for babies as my daughter is 4 so best to double check.

With regards the flu vaccine, is that not a live vaccine? I was under the impression that it was. I know Emily could not have the chicken pox vaccine due to her IVIG treatment and the fact that it is a live vaccine.

It is my understanding that the nasal-spray flu vaccine is live. But that as a shot it is not live. Our daughter did receive the flu vaccine (as a shot) while on low dose aspirin. We have been advised to give her the chickenpox vaccination 11 months after receiving IVIG. She will be 14 months old at that time. She will be removed from aspirin shortly before and for several weeks after the chickenpox vaccination. The aspirin will be replaced with a different blood thinner for that time being. Her aspirin regime will began again several weeks after receiving the vaccination. We plan on keeping her as isolated as possible when on the low dose aspirin. This is all very new to us, curious if others are being advised as you of the low risk for Reyes Syndrome with low dose aspirin. I have no idea if age plays a roll in this. Would love to know how everyone else handles a child on low dose aspirin during flu season. Thanks!

My son has been on low dose aspirin since 1996, the whole family gets flu shots yearly to lessen his chance of getting the flu. If he develops a fever we were told to stop the aspirin while the fever is present to reduce the risks of Reyes's but it is very low risk with low dose aspirin, when the fever is gone we restart the aspirin. My son takes aspirin and coumadin due to giant aneurysms, aspirin has a 7 day turn around to get out of your system, so a couple of days off aspirin while fever present does not cause too much issues as he still would receive his Coumadin, so I would not know how it would be for a KD child on low dose aspirin only.
The chickenpox vaccine had not long been out when he got KD so we were about to get him it but we too would have to take him off his aspirin for a few weeks, while my doc was investigating this further didn't he get the chickenpoxs! Needless to say it was thank god a mild case and off he came off his aspirin for a couple of weeks.
