To disclose or not disclose medical history for school?

Postby annieh on Thu Sep 06, 2007 1:27 am

Hi,

I have a question with regards to my daughter's medical history. She's attending preschool right now and my husband and I feel that there's no need to disclose my daughter's KD medical history to the daycare or school. We don't want the teacher or other parents to freak out or worried about her and associate other regular non KD related illness . She had KD 3yrs ago and she's fine right now. She's only on 1/2 tablets baby asprin treatment. She see's her Cardiologist once a year for routine checkup and echo. Is this this the right thing to do? Does anyone else feel the same way or experience some sort of discrimination or bad experiences from the school? Let me know.

Thank you,
Annie

I dont know if this will help, but we live in Switzerland and my son had KD this past june. He is being treated in Italy since there is a important research center there that cooperates with Jane Burns in San Diego. The protocol is that KD children stay OUT of day care if possible in the 6-9 months following the acute phase. The reason being to allow them to rebuild their strength, imune systems etc without being constantly subjected to the unavoidable and normal germs of a pre school. Having said all that, when i told the my son's teacher the news (which came as a big shock to us) that he would not be starting in sept but in jan, she seemed to understand only to tell me a day later that i should expect other parents to call me as they were concerned. I am now going to the school's back to school night to inform everyone that my son is not a risk for their kids but if anything, the other way around. What a pain.
Just out of curiousity, does your child have any coronary complications or did they keep her on the aspirin that long anyhow?

Hi,

Just a polite request.....since this question is asking other parent's opinion...could we please move
this interesting discussion to "general discussion" instead of "Ask the Expert" ?

thanks
