disclose or not disclose KD on medical history

Postby Nancy on Thu Sep 06, 2007 12:09 pm

Hi,

I have a question with regards to my daughter's medical history. She's attending preschool right now and my husband and I feel that there's no need to disclose my daughter's KD medical history to the daycare or school. We don't want the teacher or other parents to freak out or worried about her and associate other regular non KD related illness . She had KD 3yrs ago and she's fine right now. She's only on 1/2 tablets baby asprin treatment. She see's her Cardiologist once a year for routine checkup and echo. Is this this the right thing to do? Does anyone else feel the same way or experience some sort of discrimination or bad experiences from the school? Let me know.

Thank you,

dont know if this will help, but we live in Switzerland and my son had KD this past june. He is being treated in Italy since there is a important research center there that cooperates with Jane Burns in San Diego. The protocol is that KD children stay OUT of day care if possible in the 6-9 months following the acute phase. The reason being to allow them to rebuild their strength, imune systems etc without being constantly subjected to the unavoidable and normal germs of a pre school. Having said all that, when i told the my son's teacher the news (which came as a big shock to us) that he would not be starting in sept but in jan, she seemed to understand only to tell me a day later that i should expect other parents to call me as they were concerned. I am now going to the school's back to school night to inform everyone that my son is not a risk for their kids but if anything, the other way around. What a pain.
Just out of curiousity, does your child have any coronary complications or did they keep her on the aspirin that long anyhow?

Annie,

Our son started Kindergarten yesterday and we had a meeting with his teacher, principal & the school nurse and we educated them on what KD is and how Ethan, who has some damage to 3 three coronaries, should be handled. Basically we had to tell them that he no longer has KD and that he could not spread it to anyone and that he should be treated like any other kid unless for some reason he shows signs of heart complications. Ethan had a nuclear stress test back in March and was cleared to play non-contact sports and also to particiapte in gym class. We felt it was a great opportunity to share about KD with other people and educate our school about it. Since your child seems to be similar in their condition to my son I would suggest that you could do something similar. BTW, my son does wear a medic-alert bracelet that states he is on aspirin and that he has coronary anuerysms.

I think it is very important for the school and teachers to be aware of any child who has had KD or any other form of disease that could cause a potential problem later on in life. Especialy if the child is still taking asprin. My son is 5 years post KD and the school is very aware of his medical history. He started Kindergarten 3 months after KD (he is in the 5th grade now) I felt it was very important that the school was aware of his medical history. Kids spend more time at school then they do with us during the school year. The teachers and staff at the school can be our eyes and ears and let us know if they see anything unusual going on with our kids. My son has never been seen as different or a problem child because of his medical history. If nothing else think of it as a way of educating others about this horrible disease!

Take care

I agree that it is important that the school be aware of any medication conditions that your son has. They are responsible for your son during the day when he is away from you. If any medical emergency arrises while he is at school they will need to relay any important information to the EMT's. Also if your son is on an asprin regimen he is still at a higher than average risk for bleeding.

As the other parents have mentioned, this is also an opportunity to educate others on this disease and promote awareness. Who knows, sharing your knowledge of this disease could save a family days of misdiagnosis if they can recognise KD and seek prompt treatment.

Good luck,
