Re: Behavioral problems after KD
I haven't been on the forum for some time but came back looking for speech/language references with KD. Sara13, I was really interested in your child's experiences. My son had KD at 8 1/2 months in 2008. During the 6 months he was on aspirin we noticed a huge change in his language development. At one point pre KD he was saying "ramma" (gramma) and had a good starting vocabulary. Sometime during the 6 month period after KD his speech just stopped. It was rare to even hear a Ma or Da. He did not resume speaking until around the age of 2 and it seemed like he was starting over developmentally. Since that time he has had numerous assessments for speech and hearing. We really worked on getting him to begin communicating by using basic sign language with verbal language. Slowly we saw improvements. He has been involved in 1 1/2 years of preschool programming designed to give him extra assistance. He has just completed his first year of a pre-K program with the school district. I got his report today from the SLPathologist. His language fundamentals are good but his articulation scores in the 4th percentile for the GFTOA-2 test and in the 1st percentile for the KLPA-2 test.
We generally understand what he is saying but others have a lot of difficulty due to his undeveloped sounds. Like your child, we have done lots of hearing tests (especially since hearing impairment is in my family background) but so far he tests normal for hearing.
To be honest, I was surprised to see so few references to speech or language developmental delays since for us this is an obvious one. I realize it is awhile since you posted the original thread. Hope things are improving for your family. Know that you are not alone in the post-KD issues even though there are very few posts about this particular issue.

Re: Behavioral problems after KD
@toffeegirl
hi, my daughter had kd a year ago
she had the cerebral menegitis, but not menegitis they told me. they said because her arteries were inflamed on the outer parts of her brain.
i feel that there is a connection i am missing with her and i cant quite figure it out.
she is really sweet but she portrays some negative behavior issues
she bites herself or me, she hits me, scratches me (same things she was doing in the hospital)
i took her to a therapist and she said she is still traumatized from her hosptial stay and it takes awhile to overcome
and rebuild trust issues with her. i had no idea where that was all going.
she also said for her to see a neurologist to see if anything ahppened to her outer brain while she had kd, just to 'rule that out'.
she admitted she knew nothing of kawasaki disease.
but seeing a neurologist seemed unrealistic to me since i never heard or read that before where something could have happened during kd
she is very clingy to me, she is very super sweet, has a very short attention span, she doesnt listen when i talk to her. she gets overly excited about things
and i thought maybe she had a bit of autism was the inital reason of why we went to the therapist.
her dr felt that she was borderline and a therapist will figure it out.
it feels like she is in her own world sometimes and when i had her in preschool she was quiet and kept to herself in there.
what you had said really spoke to me, i am wondering what happened at your dr visit

Re: Behavioral problems after KD
HI Everyone, my son is 10 now and had Atypical Kawasaki when he was 1and a half yrs old. He is a very clever sausage and has a great memory so I do not know whether he remembers being held down for heart scans and blood tests and that is why he has anger issues sometimes, maybe once or twice a year or whether his immune system is trying to fight off something and it triggers a response in him. I read somewhere about the blood vessels being affected in the brain. I do feel that is a physical reaction rather than psychological. He is fine most of the time but very occasionally he gets into a place of anger that it is difficult to help him, I sort of say 'he sees red'. He may be slightly autistic and is a little overweight, again so hard to help him as he gets upset. Where do I start?

Re: Behavioral problems after KD
Hi there! My Christopher had KD with aneurism at age 6 months. He is now 7 years old and definitely shows outbursts of frustration coupled with anger. Not good at verbalizing what he is feeling. Carved his name out on his school desk and making holes with his pencils in the wooden desk. Punches his older sister at times. Was asked to have him assessed for borderline Asperger.
Re: Behavioral problems after KD
My son had atyplical KD when he was 3 years old. He is almost 6 now. He shows no coronary changes which I am so thankful for. No medical professional ever mentioned behavioral issues to me.
For the last 2-3 years now we been fighting against behavioral issues. reading your responses brings tears to my eyes. They are exactly what we are experiencing. someone above me says their child "sees red" that is exactly what we have. Afterwards he is so apologetic. But there is no deterrent, I've tried everything. We are currently in counseling and have started using some meds. He is so smart, but his behavior is causing him to have major difficulties in school.
Has anyone has an success with any specific treatments or meds?
